Whether you know it or not, plastics have entirely revolutionized life as we know it. Plastics have allowed us to manufacture basically any shape in varying densities for any wide variety of applications. Plastic is used to contain our soda pop. Plastic is used to case the hardware of our computers. Plastic is used for so many things it’s easier to list what isn’t made of plastic anymore. Artificial turf comes in a variety of colors: most people have seen the typical green astro turf at a football stadium, however, a lot of people didn’t know that astro turf comes in almost any color you can imagine. One of the benefits of plastic is that is can be easily and cheaply dyed before manufacturing. Giant’s Stadium in New York has blue artificial turf. If you’re redoing a basement as a girl’s playroom for your two daughters, pink astro turf is available. Astro turf also comes at varying lengths of "grass" but finding a company that offers a few different lengths of the same color may prove difficult. More often than not when people are using artificial turf, they need it in the shortest available length: it’s only being used to cover up something ugly like a cement basement floor.


Craft applications are almost endless when it comes to artificial turf. One of the more interesting applications was using the turf to entirely cover a vehicle. The car is unmistakable and was featured on a television show about crazy car designs, too. More common crafts that you’ll find artificial turf include grass for dioramas, train hobbyists use it sometimes to craft landscapes for their trains to pass through and for just about any simulated battle field for dungeons and dragons style strategy games involving pewter character pieces that are similar to detailed chess pieces.


Of course the main reason most people know about artificial turf is because it is used in football stadiums. Grass fields can get muddy and ruined after lots of play. Astroturf is much more durable than a grass field. Players that exert hundreds of pounds of pressure beneath their cleats as they defend against an offensive push may create divots in grass fields that can affect other players later in the game, too. Astro turf is strong enough that even through all of the rough-housing in football, it doesn’t tear or become as hazardous as mounds of dirt and slippery grass patches. Not all stadiums use artificial turf as some players complain that artificial turf fields are too hard beneath their feet. Most stadiums with artificial turf use some sort of cushion beneath these days so this argument is losing ground.
